Giving a pet a pill or syrup isn't always easy. But with the right approach, it can be done quickly, safely, and without unnecessary stress.

🐶 How to give medicine to a dog

The easiest way is through food

✅Hide the pill in a small piece of meat, pâté, cheese, or sausage.
✅Give this piece to your dog as a treat. Often, the dog won’t even notice the pill.
✅If you need to give several pills, first give 1–2 “empty” pieces, and then the ones with the medicine.

Right into the mouth

✅Open your mouth with one hand (place your thumbs on the upper jaw and the other fingers under the lower jaw).
✅Place the tablet as far back on the root of your tongue as possible.
✅Close your mouth and gently stroke your throat—this stimulates swallowing.

Empty capsules

✅If a pill has an unpleasant taste or you need to mix several medications, place them in an empty gelatin capsule (available at pharmacies or veterinary clinics).
✅The capsule dissolves quickly in the stomach without irritating the lining.
✅The capsule can be given in food or by hand, just like a regular pill.

🐱 How to give medicine to a cat

Cats are more finicky, but there are ways to handle them too.

Through food (if permitted)

✅Some cats will eat pâté, paste, or treats that contain a pill.
✅But more often than not, they smell the bitter taste of the medicine and refuse to eat.

By hand (if the cat isn't aggressive)

✅Wrap the cat in a towel, leaving only its head exposed (to prevent scratching).
✅Open its mouth by gently pressing on the corners of its jaws.
✅Place the tablet or capsule deep inside its mouth.
✅Close its mouth and gently rub its chin or nose.
✅To be safe, give it a sip of water from a syringe (without a needle).

Using empty capsules

✅If the tablet can't be crushed or tastes bitter, put it inside a gelatin capsule.
✅This reduces the bitterness and irritation.
✅This is especially helpful if you're giving a combination of several medications.

Liquid medications—syrups, drops, suspensions

✅Draw the medication into a syringe (without a needle).
✅Gently inject it into the side of the mouth, closer to the cheek.
✅Do not inject too quickly; allow the animal to swallow.

❗ Important

Do not force the animal if it resists strongly—this will only make the situation worse.
✅Some medications should not be chewed or crushed—always check with your veterinarian.
✅If you are unable to administer the medication—contact the clinic, and we will show you how to do it correctly.

👏 Little tricks

✅After giving the medication, be sure to praise your pet, give it a treat, or play with it.
✅Does the pill have an unpleasant taste? Hide it in a capsule or a special meat “pouch” (available for purchase).
✅Some medications come in the form of chewable tablets with a pleasant taste—ask your vet if there is an alternative.

Summary

👉 Giving medicine is a skill. It will get easier each time. And most importantly, it’s about taking care of your pet’s health.
