Cauda equina syndrome is a group of pathologies that affect the nerves in the lumbosacral spine, causing pain, movement disorders, and neurological disorders. It is most common in large breeds of dogs.
Causes.
The main factors that cause the disease:
- Degenerative stenosis - age-related narrowing of the spinal canal.
- Congenital anomalies - improper development of vertebrae.
- Herniated disc - nerve compression.
- Injuries - fractures or dislocations of the spine.
- Inflammatory processes - infections or meningitis.
- Tumors - neoplasms that put pressure on the nerves.
Symptoms
- Low back pain, lameness, unsteady gait.
- Incontinence of urine or feces, weakness of the tail.
- Loss of limb sensitivity.
- Decreased activity, apathy.
- Atrophy of the muscles of the hind limbs.
Diagnosis
To detect the disease, the following are used:
- Examination - checking gait, pain reaction.
- X-ray - assessment of changes in the spine.
- MRI, CT - accurate visualization of discs and nerves.
- Laboratory tests - exclusion of infections.
- Electromyography - assessment of nerve function.
Treatment.
Depending on the severity of the condition, it is used:
- Conservative therapy - restriction of movement, NSAIDs, physiotherapy.
- Surgery - elimination of nerve compression.
- Supportive therapy - weight control, orthopedic devices.
Prevention
- Balanced diet, weight control.
- Limiting excessive loads.
- Regular veterinary examinations.
Early detection and proper treatment will help keep your dog active and healthy!
