Vaccination is a reliable way to protect your pet from dangerous and often fatal diseases. Timely vaccinations not only keep your pet healthy, but also prevent the spread of infections among other animals.

In this article, we will tell you:

* when to vaccinate puppies, kittens, and adult animals,

* what diseases vaccinations protect against,

* why vaccination is important even for pets that do not go outside.

Vaccination of dogs

What diseases can be prevented?

The main diseases that dogs are vaccinated against are:

  • canine distemper,
  • parvovirus enteritis,
  • hepatitis,
  • leptospirosis,
  • rabies,
  • additionally: parainfluenza (for dogs that often come into contact with other animals — exhibitions, animal hotels).

When to vaccinate?

  • Puppies: the first vaccination is usually at 6–8 weeks, then repeat vaccinations every 3–4 weeks until 16 weeks and vaccination at 12 months.
  • Adult dogs: revaccination once a year or according to the veterinarian's schedule.

Vaccination of cats

What does the vaccine protect against?

  • panleukopenia (feline distemper),
  • herpesvirus infection (viral rhinotracheitis),
  • calicivirus,
  • rabies.
  • Additional (recommended based on risk):
  • Chlamydia — a bacterial infection that causes conjunctivitis and respiratory symptoms, especially in kittens and cats in groups.
  • Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) — a serious viral infection that suppresses the immune system. Recommended for cats that have outdoor access or contact with other cats.

📌 Before vaccinating against leukemia, a virus test must be performed — if the cat is already infected, the vaccine will not help.

When to vaccinate?

  • Kittens: first vaccination at 8–9 weeks — repeat vaccinations every 3–4 weeks until 16 weeks and vaccination at 12 months.
  • Adult cats: revaccination every year or according to the veterinarian's schedule.

Why should even “domestic” animals be vaccinated?

Many people believe that if an animal does not go outside, it is not at risk. This is a misconception:

  • Viruses and bacteria can enter the home on shoes, clothing, and other animals.
  • In case of unforeseen situations (escape, overstaying, visit to the clinic) — the risks increase.

❗ Important before vaccination

  1. Deworming: performed 7–10 days before vaccination.
  2. Animal health: vaccination is performed only on clinically healthy animals.
  3. Consultation with a veterinarian: the individual schedule depends on age, lifestyle, and region.
