Ureter obstruction in cats: a dangerous condition that can and should be treated

Obstruction (blockage) of the ureters in cats is a serious and potentially fatal disease that, without timely treatment, leads to severe kidney damage and death.

What is ureteral obstruction?

Ureters are thin tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder. If the ureter is blocked (most often by a stone, mucus plug, tumor, or stricture), urine cannot flow freely. As a result:

  • pressure in the kidney increases sharply,
  • rapidly developing renal failure,
  • The cat's condition deteriorates literally within days or even hours.

Without treatment, ureteral obstruction often results in the death of the patient.

Why is it difficult to treat?

In cats, the ureters have a very small diameter, therefore:

  • medication is often ineffective,
  • conventional surgical methods are not always possible (frequent stenosis of the postoperative site),
  • The situation requires a specialized approach.

That is why such patients should be treated in a specialized veterinary clinic with experience in nephrology, surgery, and intensive care.

A decision that could save lives — installing an artificial ureter

At our clinic, we can offer the installation of an artificial ureter (SUB-3 system) — a modern method of treating ureteral obstruction in cats.

Artificial ureter:

  • bypasses the blockage,
  • restores urine flow from the kidney,
  • lowers blood pressure and stops the destruction of kidney tissue,
  • gives cats a chance at life, even in difficult cases.

A comprehensive approach at our clinic

We accompany the patient through all stages of treatment:

  • consultation with a veterinary nephrologist;
  • conducting all necessary tests and examinations directly at the clinic;
  • selection of optimal treatment tactics;
  • installation of an artificial ureter.

The operation is performed under general anesthesia with careful anesthesiological control.

After surgery — round-the-clock monitoring

After the installation of an artificial ureter, the patient must remain:

  • in the intensive care unit,
  • under constant monitoring of the condition,
  • with monitoring of tests, diuresis, and kidney function indicators.

This approach significantly increases the chances of stabilizing the cat's condition and restoring its quality of life.

The main thing is not to delay.

Ureter obstruction is not a case where you can "wait and see." The sooner treatment begins, the greater the chances of saving your pet's life.

If your cat has been diagnosed with kidney problems, a sharp deterioration in test results, or suspected ureter obstruction, seek specialized help as soon as possible.

We are ready to help where the situation seems hopeless.
