Nowadays, cases of cannabis poisoning in animals are becoming more common. Pets, especially dogs, may accidentally eat dried parts of the plant, products or treats containing cannabis, and sometimes even inhale smoke while smoking. Unfortunately, this can be dangerous for animals.

Why is it harmful?

The main active ingredient in cannabis is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). In humans, it has a psychoactive effect, but in animals, it acts much more strongly and can lead to severe disorders of the nervous system.

The main symptoms of poisoning

Owners should be alert if, after possible contact with cannabis, their animal exhibits the following symptoms:

  • unsteady, “drunken” gait;
  • drowsiness or, conversely, agitation;
  • dilated pupils, strange gaze, nystagmus;
  • excessive salivation, vomiting;
  • urinary incontinence;
  • tremors, convulsions;
  • changes in heart rate (too slow or too fast);
  • in severe cases — loss of consciousness, coma.

Symptoms usually appear within 30 minutes to 2 hours after consumption and can last from 12 to 72 hours.

What should the owner do?

  1. Do not panic, but act quickly.
  2. If the animal has just swallowed cannabis, the veterinarian may induce vomiting. It is dangerous to do this yourself at home!
  3. Provide access to fresh water, warmth, and rest.
  4. Contact a veterinarian immediately.

How is it treated at the clinic?

At the veterinary clinic, the animal will receive symptomatic care:

  • intravenous infusions;
  • temperature and heart rate monitoring;
  • medications to relieve seizures or agitation;

There is no specific antidote, so the success of treatment depends on the speed of treatment and supportive therapy.

Prognosis

In most cases, animals recover, even if the symptoms look scary. However, serious complications are possible with large doses and in small animals.

Conclusion

Cannabis can be dangerous for your pets. If you suspect that your dog or cat has ingested something similar, contact your veterinarian immediately. The sooner help is provided, the better the prognosis.
