What First-Time Puppy Owners Need to Know
Have you just brought a puppy home? Congratulations! You have a lot of joy, new routines, and, of course, responsibilities ahead of you. To ensure your little friend grows up healthy and happy, it’s important to provide proper care, nutrition, and veterinary care right from the start.
Here are the key points every new puppy owner should know.
1. The first thing you should do is make an appointment with the vet
Even if the puppy looks healthy, a checkup with the vet is essential. We will check:
-
general health,
-
the presence of congenital defects,
-
parasites (worms, fleas),
-
the condition of the teeth, eyes, and skin.
In addition, you’ll receive a personalized vaccination and treatment schedule—clearly organized by week and free of confusion.
2. 💉 Vaccination — protection against dangerous diseases
Unfortunately, many diseases are still present in Ukraine, and they are life-threatening to animals. The first vaccinations are usually given at 6–8 weeks of age, followed by booster shots.
We use modern vaccines that protect against:
-
parvovirus,
-
plague among carnivores,
-
leptospirosis,
-
hepatitis,
-
rabies (from 12 weeks of age).
📌 Until fully vaccinated — do not walk in public places or come into contact with other animals.
3. 🦠 Worms and fleas — treatment starts early
Even a small puppy can already have parasites—which can harm its health and development.
Deworming is performed before each vaccination and regularly throughout the dog’s life. It’s also important to treat your dog for fleas and ticks—we’ll select a safe product based on your dog’s age and weight.
4. 🐶 Nutrition is the foundation of good health
Puppies grow quickly and need a specialized diet. Options:
-
Commercial dog food (dry or wet) — choose only "premium" or "super-premium" brands labeled "puppy."
-
Natural nutrition — requires a balanced diet and supplements, and should only be used after consulting a veterinarian.
Do not give:
🚫 milk, processed meats, sweets, bones (especially cooked ones), or table scraps.
5. 🐾 Potty training, leash training, and socialization
Be prepared for the fact that house training is a process, and it requires patience. Try not to scold your puppy; instead, reward him for his successes. Also, gradually teach him to:
-
a collar/harness,
-
other people and animals (after vaccination),
-
basic commands.
6. 🏡 Home Safety
If you've got a new puppy at home, it's just like having a baby. Check this out:
-
Is there no access to cables, chemicals, or medications?
-
Have any small objects that could be swallowed been removed?
-
Is there a cozy place to sleep and relax?
7. 📘 Pet ID and Microchipping
During your first visit to the clinic, we will create a pet health record to document your pet’s entire medical history.
We also recommend microchipping—it is the only reliable way to identify your pet if it gets lost.
And most importantly—love and care ❤️
Your puppy will grow up fast, and before you know it, you won’t even remember how you managed without him. Give him clear rules, a consistent daily routine, and plenty of love and care—and you’ll have a loyal friend for years to come.
