COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY
COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CT)
Computed tomography (CT for dogs and cats) is a method based on obtaining a layer-by-layer X-ray image of an organ using a computer. The patient's "body" is illuminated with an X-ray beam around the longitudinal axis, which results in transverse "slices". The examinations are performed on the new Philips MX 800 IDT tomograph (16 slices)
What is the advantage of this method?
Computed tomography of an animal makes it possible to accurately determine the localization and prevalence of the pathological process, as well as to evaluate the results of treatment. This is an accurate and modern research method.
CT scan in Zoolux clinic allows to detect and diagnose
- metastases in the early stages, planning of surgical intervention and staging of the oncological process;
- urgent CT scan - assessment of the whole body in case of polytrauma;
- vascular pathologies that were not available for diagnosis at all;
- tomography of the chest and abdominal cavity with and without contrast;
- CT of the nose, ear and brain structures, which helps to fully assess changes in complex structures;
- assess kidney function and blood flow in neoplasms;
- any foreign objects in the animal's body;
- pathologies of the spinal column and joints.
Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) scan for cats and dogs, as well as all exotic animals and rodents
Contrast-enhanced computed tomography for animals is a highly informative diagnostic procedure. It involves performing a CT scan after injecting an X-ray contrast agent into the body. The substance is transported by blood, accumulates in areas with active blood supply and reflects X-rays. Contrast enhancement can be used to make CT scans clearer, visualize soft tissues, blood vessels, areas of inflammation and oncology.
HOW IS THE PROCEDURE PERFORMED?
- Computed tomography or CT scan for animals is performed in Kyiv at 39 Dmytrivska Street (entrance 2) by a veterinary radiologist by appointment only.
- Appointments for CT scan of cats and dogs are available from 9:00 to 12:00.
- CT scan for dogs and cats is performed under sedation, under the supervision of anesthesiology department doctors.
How to prepare an animal for CT scan?
- Bring with you the results of recent examinations (if the examinations were not performed in Zoolux), in the absence of examinations, they should be performed at the clinic.
- Bring a referral from your doctor indicating differential diagnoses, the area of study, and the need for contrast media.
- Examination by an anesthesiologist immediately before anesthesia.
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Contraindications to computed tomography (CT) of animals are:
- animal pregnancy;
- intolerance to sedatives;
- severe uncompensated condition of patients, acute kidney disease for CT with contrast
Answers to frequently asked questions from a radiologist:
- How long does the examination and preparation for CT take? - The examination takes 15 minutes, additional examinations up to 2 hours if necessary, and the preparation itself takes 15 minutes.
- How long does the CT procedure itself take? - Computed tomography takes 15-30 minutes for each area to be examined, depending on whether contrast is injected or not.
- If contrast enhancement is required, how is the examination performed? - First, we always perform a native examination, then contrast is injected and another series of scans (from 1 to 4) is taken, depending on which vascular phase we need;
- Do I need to bring a drug for CT with contrast or is it available in the clinic? - The clinic has all the necessary drugs for CT with contrast;
- How long after the examination is the contrast agent excreted? - 10-20 minutes after injection, the contrast agent is already excreted in the urine into the bladder cavity and is excreted from the body with urination;
- How long after the CT scan does the animal fully regain consciousness? - depending on the general condition and concomitant problems, usually up to 60 minutes, during which time the animal is under observation in a hospital;
- When is the CT scan report issued? - the report is prepared within 12 to 48 hours. Disks with the images are given to the owner when they pick up the animal after the CT scan;
- Where can I see the results of the examination and if my doctor needs information, what should I do? - The results of the examination can be viewed in your personal Zoolux account, and the results are also sent by mail if it is indicated in the animal's questionnaire. If your doctor needs any information, the radiologist contacts the doctor individually. We work with the majority of veterinary clinics in Kyiv and throughout Ukraine, and we deliver the results of the examination with recommendations personally to the doctor who treats the animal.
- Areas for CT scanning of animals: head, spine, thoracic organs, abdominal organs, thoracic limbs, pelvic limbs, pelvis, oncological search.
