A veterinary n utritionist is a doctor who has specialized training and experience in animal nutrition, and is more competent in animal nutrition than any other specialist.
Their unique qualifications allow them to manage the complex clinical and physiological needs of animals, as well as to understand the causes, effects, and predictions of specific nutritional strategies.
When to visit a veterinary nutritionist and the most common symptoms of nutrition-related disorders:
- Refusal to eat in the absence of other symptoms
- Overweight/obesity
- Vomiting, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal disorders
- Reduced coat quality
- Picky eating habits
- Individual reaction to feed components or nutritional supplements
Dietary consultation is a specialized veterinary service based on the principles of evidence-based medicine and international standards.
The work uses up-to-date scientific data, physiological requirements standards, and clinical recommendations, and each decision is made based on calculations and a detailed analysis of the patient's diet.
During the consultation, we work with the owners to develop a personalized solution. Depending on the clinical situation, medical history, laboratory indicators, and treatment goals, this may include:
• selection of appropriate vitamin and mineral supplements to correct the existing diet;
• development of a complete balanced home diet with accurate calculations and recommendations; • selection of commercial feed (dry, wet, or combined) with analysis of the composition and suitability for the patient's needs; • a combination of several strategies, if this is optimal for the pet;
Each recommendation is based on individual calculations, analysis of ingredients, the ratio of minerals, protein, fat, fiber, assessment of compliance with physiological or clinical needs, and evidence-based modern standards.
After the consultation, separate work is carried out within the agreed time frame: research, data verification, calculations, and the formulation of clear written recommendations. This avoids "quick" decisions and minimizes the risk of nutrient deficiencies or excesses.
Animals with eating disorders constitute a separate category of patients. In dogs with food neophilia or cats with acquired neophobia, the problem often goes beyond "just finding the right food" after treatment. In such cases, the consultation includes an analysis of the conditions of keeping, feeding regime, stress factors, and the formation of a step-by-step strategy for restoring eating behavior. This requires additional time and deeper analysis, but significantly increases the effectiveness of working with the patient. At the same time, if the situation requires the full intervention of a veterinary behaviorist, the owner will receive appropriate recommendations and referrals.
Dietary consultation is systematic work with diet as part of treatment or prevention. Properly formulated nutrition reduces the risk of complications, supports control of chronic conditions, and improves the animal's quality of life.
Nutrition is extremely important for maintaining optimal health, as well as for controlling the symptoms and progression of certain diseases in your pet.
It is important to remember that if you have any problems with your pet's diet, you should consult a veterinary nutritionist. A specialist will help you identify the cause of any issues related to food or nutritional supplements and optimize your pet's diet, taking into account its individual needs and characteristics.
