What is SDMA? SDMA is an important indicator that helps assess your pet's kidney function. It is a key indicator of function, especially in the early stages of the disease.

SDMA

• symmetrical dimethylarginine
• produced by all nuclear cells at a constant rate
• is not reabsorbed
• excreted by the kidneys
• an indirect marker of GFR (glomerular filtration rate)

Detection of kidney problems at early stages.

• SDMA can detect even the slightest changes in kidney function when other blood parameters may remain within normal limits.
• SDMA detects kidney damage with a loss of function of only 20-40%, while other markers, such as creatinine, increase with a loss of up to 75% of function.
• SDMA is an extremely valuable marker, because timely diagnosis allows you to start treatment at a stage when you can save your pet's health.

What animals should be tested for SDMA?

• Young animals with hereditary kidney disease
• Animals with congenital kidney disorders
• Cats over 6 years old
• Dogs over 10 years old
• Everyone after acute kidney injury
• Everyone with kidney disease to establish the stage of CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease)
• Patients with nephrolithiasis
• When using nephrotoxic drugs
• Before anesthesia

How to send an SDMA study to Zoolux?

When preparing the material, the ambient temperature should be taken into account

Sample stability:

• 4 days at 20-24°C
• 7-14 days at a temperature of 4 ºС
• Frozen (24 months, up to -80°C)
   

Use serum -500 μL

Thermoses, refrigerants, thermal bags or thermal containers can be used to transport and maintain the temperature of the sample.


Preparation for analysis:

Fasting diet 8-12 hours (except: other recommendations of the doctor regarding the feeding regimen; puppies, kittens up to 4 months (4 hours), breeds up to 2 months (2 hours))
