When should you worry?

If you notice that your dog is asking to urinate more often, or doing so in an inappropriate place, this may indicate a health problem.

In some cases, an increase in urinary frequency may be physiological and not a symptom of a disease, for example, puppies urinate more often than adult dogs and this is not a problem. Also, in winter, some dogs are very fond of eating snow, which melts in the body and turns into water, and against the background of increased fluid intake, diuresis may become more frequent.

In order to find out the cause of the increased urination, you should first of all pay attention to the following points

  • portions of urine;

  • discomfort/pain when urinating;

  • impurities in the urine (blood, sand);

  • color of urine (clear, brown, red, purulent);

  • odor.

Frequent urination in small portions is a symptom of an inflammatory process in the lower urinary tract (urethra, bladder).

The causes of inflammation in the bladder or urethra can be bacteria, uroliths, microliths.

In the case of frequent urination in large portions, it will be quite difficult to determine the causes, they can be varied.

Common causes are:

  • kidney disease,

  • endocrine disorders (diabetes mellitus, non-diabetes mellitus, Cushing's syndrome, etc,)

  • inflammatory diseases accompanied by hyperthermia (for example, inflammation of the uterus - pyo-hydrometer, babesiosis)

For the primary diagnosis of the causes of this pathology, an abdominal ultrasound and a general urinalysis are required, then the doctor, based on the results of the studies and symptoms, will determine the necessary methods of further diagnosis to establish the diagnosis and prescribe effective treatment.
